About Me
๐ Oslo, Norway ๐ March 1st, 1998
I've been slowly learning Japanese on and off since my late teens, and more seriously this past year โ around half an hour a day, lately focused on kanji and listening comprehension. Languages in general fascinate me. A while back I spent a couple of months on Toki Pona, a constructed language with only about 130 words, which leads you to communicating very differently. Many things need to be described rather than named, something that leads to differences depending on the perspective. A car becomes a "tomo tawa" (moving room) to a driver, "kiwen utala" (hard thing that hits you) to someone walking in the middle of traffic. I haven't touched it in a while, but I still find it a neat idea.
I've been more intentional about music this year, often carrying around an mp3 player. It feels like a bit of a hipster move, but I like having something that isn't attached to my phone (a device which is quickly quickly becoming so ever-present and neccesary that it reminds me of the dystopian sci-fi and cyberpunk novels I'd read as a kid). Some friends have dragged me to a few metal concerts lately, which I've enjoyed more than expected. I've always appreciated the artistry that went into metal, but never realized how much the listening context dampened the whole experience for me until I heard it live. Most recently had a great time at FuzzFest in Kristiansand, where I found myself nodding along to the prog-influenced solos at the start of the day, and in deep in the moshpit at the end.
I boulder when I'm being consistent about it. Got decent at it last semester going twice a week, though this year's been patchier. I read fiction when I get the chance; just finished the sixth Dungeon Crawler Carl book and started Mistborn. I used to take a lot of photos, but a phone downgrade knocked most of the joy out of casual picture-taking for now.
